Kyoto To Osaka and Dotonbori

The following morning we caught a high speed train to Osaka. I love grabbing a bento box for these train rides. I enjoy the lunch as much as any hot meal from a restaurant. They are always well-prepared and filling.

Of course I got some Katsu

The shinkansen high speed train is fast, incredibly fast. Upwards of 200mph.
Here is about 1.1 seconds of footage taken from the train, slowed down to 240 fps.

After checking in at the hotel, headed to Dōtonbori, a popular shopping and eatery area. Along a stretch of the Dōtonbori Canal, the area was designated an entertainment district by the Tokugawa Shogonate 1621 and has been so ever since. It’s named for the a businessman who started efforts to build the canal to connect the two branches of the Yokobori river in an effort to improve commerce, which apparently worked! These days, pretty much anyone visiting Osaka will make a trip. They come to see the gaudy oversized signs and land and sea mascots, and to grab some local specialties. Takoyaki is what is hot. Literally hot balls of grilled dough and octopus.

It was raining and crowded and I’ve been here before, so I didn’t bother taking many photos of the place.

Meet the Parents

The restaurant was very nice. We has some sort of hotpot with noodles and beef. Very delicious. The desserts were also tasty.

A pretty gaudy supermarket near our hotel.

Some of the “made fresh” items at the supermarket. On the left seems to be baked rigatoni with poached egg on top.

Fascinating shots. So different from anything in the US.
