Kawaguchiko and Fuji
To Fuji
We travel by train towards Tokyo then divert by bus to head up the mountains to Kawaguchiko. The whole journey takes over 5 hours.
The town is named for Lake Kawaguchi, one of the 5 lakes surrounding Mt Fuji. While this lake is surrounded by lodges and other tourist attractions, we are visiting in the off season.
Seiko booked a nice hostel and our room had a beautiful view of Fuji. I found after a few days here, that most places have a view of Fuji. It is massive.
With most of the day lost to travel, we decide to talk through the town and try to find the lake.
About half of those down by the lake seemed to be tourists, the rest were fishing. Probably for Japanese white crucian carp.
By the time we got to the lake, clouds descended upon Fuji.
Hōtō and Horse Sashimi
We go for local food at a very popular restaurant in the town.
We start with horse sashimi, which tasted like meaty soft chewing gum.
For the entree, Seiko had pork Hōtō.
I had spicy wild boar Hōtō. It was a hearty stew with thick homemade Udon noodles. It was the best meal I had this trip.
Here I am outside of the restaurant.
I tried this local Fuji sake, and it was not that great.
